Chief of Karnali Province Govinda Prasad Kalauni has called upon all to work proactively to bring an end to all sorts of discriminatory ill-practices.

In a message of best wishes on the occasion of Caste-Based Discrimination and Untouchability Elimination Day today, Kalauni has asked the stakeholders to work against the discriminatory practices in the society adding that discriminations create obstacles to the country’s peace, development and prosperity.

The government is marking this day (Jestha 21) as the Caste-Based Discrimination and Untouchability Elimination Day after Nepal was declared an untouchability-free nation in 2006.

Caste-based discrimination is against the constitution and is criminalized in Nepal.

Article 24 of the Constitution of Nepal stipulates that no person shall be treated with any kind of untouchability or discrimination on grounds of caste, ethnicity, origin, community.

Likewise, a similar provision is reaffirmed in the Caste-Based Discrimination and Untouchability (Offence and Punishment) Act, 2011.

Province Chief Kalauni has said that such legal provisions have gradually created foundations for ending discrimination and oppression against the Dalit community.
