375 schools damaged by quake reconstructed in Makawanpur

Out of the total 409 community schools in Makwanpur district damaged by the earthquake on April 29, 2072 BS, 375 school buildings have been reconstructed so far. According to the Makwanpur-based District Project Implementation Unit, Hetauda under the National Reconstruction Authority Central Project Implementation Unit (Education), a total of 1,665 classrooms have been constructed in 375 schools in the district till last fiscal year.

Out of 516 schools in Makawanpur at that time, 2,310 classrooms in 409 schools were completely damaged by the earthquake. Badri Pathak, head of the District Project Implementation Unit (Education) in Hetauda, ​​informed that the reconstruction work of the schools damaged in three modalities is in full swing.

Of the schools that have been reconstructed, 313 will be constructed under an agreement through the School Management Committee, 32 under the facilitation of NGOs and 34 on behalf of the Government of Japan (JICA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Apart from classrooms, toilet management has been completed in 149 schools and drinking water management in 84 schools.

According to the first modality, there are 1,026 classrooms, 149 toilets and 84 school drinking water programs in 313 school buildings. Of them, 220 classrooms of 68 school buildings have been completed in FY 2073/74 and 220 classrooms of 68 school buildings in 2074/75.

In FY 2075/76 (first) 200 classrooms of 65 school buildings, in FY 2075/76 (second) 153 classrooms of 51 school buildings and 70 toilets were constructed. Similarly, 205 classrooms, 79 toilets and 84 drinking water management programs of 61 school buildings were received in 2076/77 BS. The program was constructed in the fiscal year 2077/78, according to the office. Similarly, for the fiscal year 2077/78, the program was extended for the construction of 28 classrooms in eight more school buildings.

A total of 700 classrooms in 56 schools are being constructed through bidding process as per the contract agreement signed by JICA and ADB through the Central Project Implementation Unit. Similarly, 221 classrooms were constructed in 32 schools of permanent nature on behalf of the organization. According to the chief reader of the unit, the construction of 1,947 classrooms of 409 school buildings in all the three modalities in the district has progressed by mid-July 2077/78 BS and 1,665 classrooms of 375 schools have been completed.

Similarly, drinking water management program has been completed in 149 toilets and 82 schools. Currently, 282 classrooms of 34 schools are under construction. Currently, the construction of four more schools has been published with the loan assistance of ADB. Meanwhile, the expenditure progress of the District Project Implementation Unit Office (Education) under the National Reconstruction Authority has been found to be remarkable. The office has stated that the physical progress of the fiscal year 2077/78 is 98.20 percent.

Meanwhile, out of various community schools in the district, 138 schools have not been able to include physical construction program due to lack of land, low number of students, lack of access to transportation and lack of necessity. The earthquake damaged 46 government buildings, 65 health facilities and 124 monasteries in the district on Saturday.
