Residents of two municipalities on the eastern and northern sides of the Saptari district have been asked to stay on high alert following the burst of an embankment at Lahurekhoch in Belaka Municipality-8 in the Udayapur district by the flooded Saptakoshi river.
The embankment at Lahurekhoch has burst and the river has started advancing towards some wards of Saptakoshi and Kanchanrup Municipalities in the Saptari district, thus posing risks to riverside settlements, according to the district administration office. There is a high possibility of the flooded river advancing towards wards-6 and 7 of Saptakoshi Municipality, and the ward-1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 10 of Kanchanrup Municipality and Gobargadha in Kankalini Municipality-13 are at risk, said the municipality mayor Lalan Gupta.
Following the embankment burst, police teams from the area police offices, Kanchanpur, Hanuman Nagar, Bharadaha and Phattepur have been deployed to make the people at risk aware and ask them to stay alert and rush to safety, said Superintendent of Police Abinarayan Kafle.
They have been urged not to visit the embankment area and graze cattle and fish in and around the area.
Meanwhile, a team led by Chief District Officer Janardan Gautam has inspected the risky areas in Saptakoshi and Kanchanrup Municipalities.
