The constitutional bench of the Supreme Court that had been hearing the writ petitions filed against the government’s decision to allow extraction of aggregates has today issued an interim order calling for a halt in the extraction of aggregates.

The constitutional bench was headed by Chief Justice Cholendra Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana and comprised of Justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Meera Khadka, Hari Krishna Karki and Bishwonbhar Prasad Shrestha.

While announcing the budget for the next fiscal year 2078/79, the government had mentioned allowing extraction of aggregates in point number 199. There had been seven writs filed at the Supreme Court seeking a cancellation of the aforementioned point.

Senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi along with advocates Shailendra Prasad Ambedar, Ram Bahadur Shahi, Punya Prasad Khatiwada, Hari Ram Balaju, Atish Karki and Bikram Nagarkoti had filed separate writ petitions at the apex court against the government’s decision to allow extraction of aggregates.

The writs had sought an interim order from the Supreme Court to stop the implementation of point 199 of the budget for next fiscal year. The writs had also urged the court to direct the government to protect and preserve the environment of the Chure region along with protection of the culture, tradition and natural resources of the area.
