Wildlife attacks claim lives of 14 people in Chitwan National Park

A total of 14 people lost their lives due to attacks by wild animals at the Chitwan National Park and Division Forest Office area in fiscal year 2020/21.

Among those who lost their lives, 11 were killed in attacks by wild animals inside the Chitwan National Park (CNP) while three others were killed in places that fall under the jurisdiction of Division Forest Office in Chitwan and Nawalparasi.

Meanwhile, Lokendra Adhikari, Information Officer of CNP, said that the highest number of deaths were due to attacks by tigers and rhinos. Five people each died in tiger and rhino attacks.

Similarly, two others died due to elephant attacks, and one each in wild boar and blue bull attacks. Altogether, 43 people sustained injuries from such attacks at the Chitwan National Park and Division Forest Office area during the period.

Of the injured, 25 people sustained minor injuries and 18 were critically injured, Adhikari added. Eight people had been killed in attacks by wild animals in CNP in fiscal year 2019/20. Of them, one person was killed in a wildlife attack in an area that falls under the jurisdiction of the Division Forest Office. A total of 31 people had sustained injuries in wildlife attacks in the last fiscal year.

The Chitwan National Park distributed Rs 17.484 million as relief to the families of those who lost their lives and also those who were injured in attacks by wild animals.
