Nepali Congress district presidents have put forward two options for holding the party's 14th general convention.

The meeting of the district chairpersons held in Kathmandu for the past two days has expressed doubt that the general convention would be held within the time stipulated by the Statute of the party.

Referring to the dispute over active membership, the meeting emphasized that the election should be held in August by finalizing the active membership in a transparent manner through 'fast track' process.

In a meeting, the discussion was also held for the delegates of the 13th General Convention holding a special general convention for the next six months to a year, said NC president of Kavrepalanchok Madhu Acharya.

Stating that the legitimacy of the party cannot be given by the Election Commission, most of the district chairpersons insisted that the party should not follow the path not envisaged by the constitution, said Acharya. He said that the process of the general convention should be regular.

During the meeting, more than 35 district chairpersons expressed the view that there was a dispute over the active membership of their respective district, said the president of Nepali Congress Chitwan Jit Narayan Shrestha. The meeting was attended by 38 district chairpersons while 17 district chairpersons took part virtually.

NC Nuwakot president Jagadishwar Narsingh KC said that the active membership sent from the district should be finalized without any controversy and the party should go for the general convention.

Addressing the meeting of the district presidents, senior leader of the party Ram Chandra Poudel had said that the party would become illegal without a general convention within the month of Bhadra as the Constitution stipulates. Leader Poudel said that such a situation has not come up before Congress, which has a history of 75 years.

General Secretary of the party Dr Shashank Koirala said that the party leadership should work to advance the party's general convention process based on the suggestions given by the district chairs.

Former general secretary of the party, Prakash Man Singh, said that the leadership should take initiative to resolve the active membership dispute and hold a lawful general convention as suggested by the party's district presidents.
