Main opposition Nepali Congress has decided to take the initiative to form a new government as per the Constitution after incumbent Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli lost vote of confidence in the House of Representatives.
A meeting of the NC office-bearers and former office-bearers held at President Deuba’s residence in Budhanilkantha today decided to make all-out efforts to form a new government as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution as called by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.
NC Joint General-Secretary Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat informed that the meeting had also decided to make efforts to secure the full support of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) for the new government while the CPN (Maoist Centre) has lent its support for the same.
After PM Oli lost the vote of confidence in the Lower House, President Bhandari on Monday had called on the parties to stake a claim for the prime minister within 9:00 pm on May 13. Any member of the HoR who can prove their majority with the support of two or more political parties can form the government as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution
On the same day, NC President Deuba, CPN Maoist Centre chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal chair Upendra Yadav had jointly urged the president to call for the formation of a majority government.
In the HoR, CPN-UML has 121 parliamentarians, NC 63 (two suspended), CPN-MC (53, with four suspended), JSP 34 (two suspended), the Rastriya Janamorcha, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party have one each and there is one independent parliamentarian.
