Bimalendra Nidhi, another candidate for the post of President, has decided to support Sher Bahadur Deuba, the candidate for the post of President of the 14th General Convention of the Nepali Congress.
In a statement issued today, Nidhi said that he had accepted the request of PM Deuba by telephone this morning and came to his residence to support him and said that he had decided to support him in the second round of voting for the post.
He has requested all the delegates of the General Convention to support him in the first phase of the election and provide invaluable votes in support of Deuba for the post of chairperson in the second phase of the election. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his comrades who voted for him in yesterday's election for the post of President of the 14th General Convention and to the delegates who voted for him.
In the election held under the General Convention, re-polling has started after none of the candidates for the post of President got 51 percent votes. Deuba and Shekhar Koirala, the two candidates who got the most votes in the first round, are competing in the second round. Voting will start at 3:30 pm today.
According to the Congress constitution, it is mandatory to get more than 50 percent of the votes cast for the election. If for the first time any candidate does not get more than 50 percent of the votes, re-voting will take place between the two candidates who get the most votes. In re-polling, the candidate who gets the majority will win.
Kalyan Gurung, who is a candidate for the post, has also said that he will support Deuba for the post. In the first round, Gurung got 22 votes.
He said that he had decided to support Deuba as the party's chairman to create an atmosphere of consensus within the party after holding discussions with his constituents this morning.
Earlier, presidential candidate Prakash Man Singh had announced his support for Deuba.
