The Election Commission of Nepal has granted authenticity to the Upendra Yadav led Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (JSP).

The EC had formed a five-member bench and had conducted a legal hearing from July 18 to 22 to address the issues relating to the authenticity of the party. Upendra Yadav-led faction and Mahantha Thakur-led faction had been battling over the ownership issue of the party after a dispute took place in the party, just a year after the merger between Samajbadi Party-Nepal and Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal.

The Commission had summoned executive members of both factions of the party to verify their signatures on Monday. On the basis of the majority of the turnover of the executive members and signatures, the Yadav faction was given authenticity for the JSP, according to the Commission.

Among the 51 executive members of the party, 34 from the Yadav faction had arrived at the Commission’s office to verify their signatures whereas the arrival of Thakur faction executive members remained at 16.

One of the JSP executive members, Resham Chaudhary, who is currently in jail for murder, however, remained neutral.

Following the verdict of the bench led by Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya on Monday, the path to register a new political party has opened for the Mahanta faction.

Disputes had emerged between party chair Yadav and another chair Thakur regarding the power equation. There are a total of 35 parliamentarians representing JSP in both Houses of the federal parliaments. Among them, 3 are National Assembly members while 32 are members of the House of Representatives.
