The United States men's volleyball team will play in the final of the Volleyball Nations League after they smashed Italy in straight sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 in Gdansk, Poland on Saturday evening.
Matthew Anderson earned 17 points for the winners, while Thomas Jaeschke delivered 16. Alessandro Michieletto, Gianluca Galassi and Daniele Lavia were the most prolific scorers for Italy with nine points each.
Coach John Speraw's side dominated from the very beginning as Italy could not find a way to stop their effective attacks. Torey Defalco closed the first set with a strong spike to make it 25-19.
Then the Americans kept control as Anderson turned out to be unstoppable for the Italians. Ferdinando de Giorgi's players fought until the end, but on Saturday evening they did not show enough quality to surprise the United States. In the second set they scored just 18 points, while in the last set they just earned one point more.
The United States will face Poland in the final, who beat Japan 3-1 earlier on the day, in Ergo Arena Gdansk on Sunday.
