The Ang Tshiring Sherpa Memorial Golf Tournament, taking place at the Gokarna Forest Golf Course, holds big importance to many participating in the event.
When asked why the tournament is important, Suhrid Ghimire, Executive Chairman of Continental Trading Enterprises and President of Gokarna Forest Golf Club, went on to explain why it is important for him. He said, “Everyone knows how Ang Tshiring was an avid golfer, and also a very successful businessman. He made a big impact on everyone around him when he was still here. Though it is sad to have lost him, this tournament is the best way to remember not only him but also his work. He had a huge impact in the world of golf in Nepal and it can be seen.”
While there is much to say when it comes to Ang Tshiring’s work, Abhinav N Rana, Managing Director of Star Alliance Hospitality mentioned, “This tournament is important to many because of Ang Tshiring’s nature. He was a genuine person and I think this is an important event for everyone close to him is because we have so many good memories for him.”
Reminiscing the old-times, Rana added, “We had a nickname for each other. I used to call him emperor and he used to call me ‘junge’ because of my ‘Rana’ surname.”
While talking about Ang Tshiring some have fond memories of playing golf. His nephew, Dawa Sherpa, recalls why the tournament is important for him.
Dawa says, “Tshiring uncle is the reason I know golf since I saw him play golf for almost 25 years. Prior to that, I had no clue about this sport. So, it is important for me personally because he introduced this sport to me and how much he did for the sport in Nepal itself!”
Meanwhile, Nirakar Yakthumba, the bass guitarist of the well-known Nepali band, 1974 AD, and also a very close friend to Sherpa, shared, “I have not played golf for a long time. Ang Tshiring and I did play before at Royal Nepal Golf Course but it has been a long time now. However, I felt like this is a good place to start again! I had a good day and I am more than happy to be a part of something that not only remembers my good friend but honours his work as well.”
Pratima Sherpa, who is almost like a daughter to Ang Tshiring, points out how important this is for her. She mentions, “I cannot find words to describe why this tournament is so important to me.”
With tears in her eyes, she adds, “I had my mid-term, and only slept for three hours but I still felt it in my heart that I should be here. Even in the morning, I could not hold back my emotion seeing his pictures everywhere. I miss him and this event holds massive importance in my heart.”
