Urging the YouTube medium to catch the edge of journalism
Balkrishna Basnet, Chairperson of Press Council of Nepal, has asked the YouTube medium to catch the edge of journalism. Regarding false and one-sided information spreading from social media including YouTube, Chairperson Basnet has asked YouTubers to develop institutions and be responsible.
There was also a trend of not knowing what media and journalism is. Individually run YouTube also has a responsibility towards the country and society. Civil liability. YouTube, which operates as a media, must fully comply with the basic aspects of journalism, journalistic code of conduct. Chairman Basnet said in the orientation program held by the council on Monday about the newly started media through online.
Addressing the publishers and editors of the newly opened online media, he said that everyone should be aware that without healthy, dignified, factual and responsible journalism, they cannot be the conductors of the journey of development and prosperity.
‘Now it is necessary for the media to change the direction of journalism to make the country rich and free the people from despair.
It is a crime to write and speak things that are not happening, to make one-sided accusations, to give false information at someone’s instigation. Chairman Basnet said, ‘Journalism should play a creative and constructive role for the development of the country. We should not only show the problem, but also raise questions with options for solutions.’
He informed that the Press Council is working hand in hand with various media worlds for the development and expansion of creative journalism.
‘Creative journalism is in favor of the country and the people. People friendly. It is development-oriented and also brings prosperity.’ Basnet said, ‘The media should do more studies and research to choose a different path. If we can do that, the current flood of wrong information in some media and the viral disease in social networks will reduce by itself.’
The Council has been conducting regular orientation classes for journalists working online and on YouTube to effectively implement the Journalist Code of Conduct.
Resource person Poonam Paudel facilitated how to follow the various communication guidelines issued by the council including women and children.
The council has started an exemplary work in South Asia by regulating the media that runs through social networks including YouTube.
