KATHMANDU: Beginning today, the Bagmati Province Transport Management Office is rolling out a system that allows drivers to obtain their licenses digitally via the ‘Nagarik App’ (Citizen App).

This innovation means that after successfully completing their driving test, drivers will no longer need a physical license card.

Prime Minister KP Oli announced this initiative on social media, stating that those who pass the driving test will receive their driver’s licenses directly on their mobile devices.

The goal of this initiative is to streamline the licensing process for drivers and improve service efficiency.

Digital licenses will be accessible immediately after passing the driving exam, and the system will also include options for digital payments in the event of traffic violations.

Prime Minister Oli highlighted that this new approach resolves previous issues related to obtaining printed vehicle licenses and simplifies the process of paying fines for traffic infractions.

He stated, “This has ended the problem of not printing the vehicle license and has also removed the hassle of paying fines for violations.”

Initially, the pilot program will operate from the Bagmati Province Transport Management Office, with plans to expand the services available through the Citizen App in the future.

Prime Minister Oli reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing wait times for citizens requiring various services, expressing hope that this would enable quicker service delivery.

This initiative follows five months of testing the digital license distribution via the Citizen App, as announced by the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Transport of Bagmati Province during a recent event.

To aid in the verification of digital licenses, the ministry has provided traffic police with 104 mobile phones, allowing for efficient on-the-go checks.

With this new system, the expectation is that the lengthy wait for printed license cards will soon be a thing of the past.
