Satuvain (eating satu) festival is being celebrated in Mithila region today. Mahottari, Dhanusha, Sarlahi, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Siraha and Saptari of Madhesh Pradesh and Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur of Bihar state of India celebrated Satuvain since this morning, by eating satu.

Pandit Kalikant Jha of Jaleshwor Municipality-8 said that Satuvain festival is celebrated in every house in the region these days as there is a tradition of welcoming the new year by celebrating Satuvain festival in Mithila. Flour is prepared by roasting gram, maize, barley, soybean and other commodities. According to Professor Dhurba Ray of Yalna Vidyapeeth Matihani, it is customary to celebrate Satuvain festival in Mithila today by eating the same flour.

Upendra Pathak, priest of Jaleshwar Nath Mahadev Temple, said that it is customary for everyone to celebrate Satuvain festival by eating satu on the first day of the new year in Mithila with the belief that Satu will provide coolness, keep the person healthy, simple and cultured throughout the year.

Nowadays, every member of every household in the area eats satu first before eating anything, and it is customary to eat satu with sugar or salt according to one’s taste. On the day of Satuvain festival, women give satu in everyone’s hands and blessing them to stay cool and healthy. It is customary for all members of the family to eat the first meal on this day.

On this day, all the members of the family, from the children of relatives, neighbors and friends, take blessings of the elders. The women get up in the morning and worship the deity, first of all by offering satu to the deity. There is a tradition of feeding satu to everyone by mixing it with the offerings brought after worship.
