The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has a plan to bring the new under-construction landfill site at Bancharedanda in use after Dashain and Tihar festival.
The KMC has been facing problems in managing waste as the Sisdol landfill site which is in use for the past 13 years is fully occupied to its capacity. Spokesperson for KMC, Ishwarman Dangol told NepalNews that although the Sisdol landfill site has been completely occupied, the Waste Management Division is compelled to dump the wastes at the site as there is no other option. He said, “We hope the under-construction landfill site at Bancharedanda would be ready for use.”
The construction of the pond at Bancharedanda is expected to be completed after Tihar festival, Dangol said.
Meanwhile, at least 150 vehicles have been engaged in carrying the waste to the Sisdol landfill site.
Previously, when the monsoon was in full swing, many vehicles carrying the wastes to the landfill site stranded along the 200-metre road built over the waste that had turned into a quagmire due to torrential rain. The vehicles still struggle to reach the spot for dumping the waste at the height of 80 metres.
According to Department of Environment Chief Hari Kumar Shrestha, the landfill site would have been ready for use by now had there been no lockdown or prohibitory order issued.
Meanwhile, the construction of the pond at the site has been expedited with the work being carried out in two shifts.
Around 1,200 metric tons of garbage generated in Kathmandu Valley every day is managed at Sisdol constructed in 2006.
