On the fourth day of Martyr's Week, a wreath is laid at the statue of Martyr Dharma Bhakta Mathema. Today, Mathema is commemorated by offering a bouquet of flowers at the statue at the place where he laid down his life for the attainment of democracy.
The metropolis has already replaced the full-sized statue of Mathema at the place where he was born in Ombahal of Kathmandu and at Sifal, the place where he was executed.
A bouquet of flowers was laid at the statue with the participation of CPN (Maoist) Chief Bidya Sundar Shakya, Chief Administrative Officer Loknath Poudyal, Ward 7 Chairman Shuddha Kumar Dangol, ward members and limited staff. Due to the Corona epidemic, Martyr's Week programs are being organized among a limited number of people this year.
Mathema, who was born in Ombahal, was hanged in Sifal, Kathmandu on charges of carrying out activities against the then ruler.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City is constructing 'Dharmabhakta Mathema Mahanagar Manav Seva Ashram' in honor of Martyr Mathema. The ashram will be constructed on 18 ropanis of land of Bageshwori temple complex connected to White monastery of Ward No. 6 provided by Nagarjuna Municipality. For this, the corporation has already submitted a detailed project report to the municipality.
The then Rana Prime Minister Juddha Shamsher had decided to execute Shukraraj Shastri, Dharmabhakta Mathema, Gangalal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand. Four days after the verdict, Shukraraj Shastri was hanged at Teku, seven days later, Mathema was hanged at Sifal and nine days later, Dasharath Chand and Gangalal Shrestha were shot dead at Shobha Bhagwati on the banks of Bishnumati river.
