In protest of the Eastern Kathmandu Urban Development Project initiated by three municipalities in the northeast of Kathmandu Valley, the local residents have announced not to give their lands for the project.

The local residents of Shankarapur Municipality-9 have asked the administration to release their land plot, stating that the project lacks transparency and was initiated without informing them. The ward people have said that they did not want to join the urban development project.

The dissatisfied locals have also formed Indrayeni Concerns Committee to protest the urban development project, adding that the ward office and municipality turned a deaf ear to the demands of the Committee.

The coordinator of the Committee, Dharmaraj Karki, said that they were planning to stage a sit-in in the ward office in the first phase.

The local residents further said the plotting through its integration would encroach upon cultivable land and heritages.

Karki was of the view that the local people agreed to reject a concrete jungle in the area whereas high as 85 per cent of the people are dependent on agriculture.

He said that most of the issues of the project were still non-transparent.

As decided earlier, the project would cover Shankarapur, Kageshwori Manohara, and Gokarneshwor municipalities.
