List of Indian films to be screened at Cannes Film Festival

Several Bollywood celebs graced the red carpet at the 75th Cannes Film Festival which commenced yesterday. India has been declared the official "Country of Honor" at the Cannes Film Market this year. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has selected six Indian films to be screened portraying distinct storylines tinged with the country's unique cultural colors. The films are not part of the official Cannes screening but will be screened on the famous Marche du Films, also known as Cannes Film Market. The great thing about this line-up is that it spotlights regional films and filmmakers. Here's everything you need to know about the six Indian films to be screened at the fest.

Rocketry – The Nambi Effect (Hindi, English, Tamil)

Directed by and starring R Madhavan, the movie will get its world premiere at Cannes 2022. The film is based on the life of Nambi Narayanan, a former scientist and aerospace engineer at the Indian Space Research Organization. In 1994, Narayanan was charged with leaking important defense secrets. He later fought his proceedings and received a Supreme Court verdict in 1996.

Godavari (Marathi)

Nikhil Mahajan's Marathi feature film Godavari will also be screened at the festival. The film follows the story of a man named Nishikant Deshumuk and his family trying to accept the deaths of two close relatives. Starring Neena Kulkarni, Jitendra Joshi and Vikram Gokhale, the film won the Best Actor (Male) Award and Special Jury Award at the 52nd International Film Festival of India.

Dhuin (Maithili)

Directed by Achal Mishra, Dhuin follows an ambitious, small-town theatre actor with dreams of making it big in Mumbai. But faced with obligations to his family, earns a living by performing on the streets for the local community. However, the blockade of COVID 19 is affecting his goals. This film was previously screened at the 22nd Mumbai Film Festival.

Alpha Beta Gamma (Hindi)

Alpha Beta Gamma, directed by Shankar Srikumar, is a romantic comedy that premiered at the 52nd International Film Festival of India. It's the story of a woman, her soon-to-be ex-husband, and her to-be husband who are stuck together during the blockade of COVID 19.

Boomba Ride (Mishing)

Boomba Ride of Biswajeet Bora aims to satirize the corruption of India's rural education system. The story revolves around a lower primary school where the main struggle of the teachers is to keep the school alive as it has only one student, named Boomba.

Niraye Thathakalulla Maram (Malayalam)

The Malayalam drama Niraye Thathakalulla Maram, directed by Jayaraj, tells a story of a boy who helps a blind old man and only remembers his name.
