UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is in self-isolation. His deputy spokesman Farhan Haque said that he is in self-isolation after contacting a person who was later found to be infected with COVID-19.

Although he did not show any symptoms and was negative in the initial test, he has canceled all his involvements to take extra precautions.

He will be working from home until he is tested again on Thursday, December 9, said Farhan Haque during the UN press conference on Tuesday. The Secretary-General was originally scheduled to attend a high-level program of the United Nations Emergency Response Fund on Wednesday. He was expected to address the Security Council on Thursday in an open debate on terrorism and climate change.

His scheduled appearance as the guest of honor at the annual celebration of the United Nations Press Council in downtown Manhattan on Wednesday night has also been affected. Guterres, 72, was one of the first New Yorkers to receive his first vaccination in late January 2021 and his second dose sometime later. He took a booster dose on November 26.
