As the Government of Nepal has decided to close government offices for two days a week due to rising fuel costs, the offices will now be closed on Saturday and Sunday. A few years ago, the government had decided to give leave two days but the decision was reversed after some time. The government has stated that the leave will be implemented in educational institutions as well.
This decision was taken by the Council of Ministers last month as per the suggestion of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) after the escalating economic crisis in the country.
The cabinet has decided to give two days public holidays along with the decision to cut government expenditure by 20 per cent.
In 1999, during the tenure of the then Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, the decision to grant two days leave was implemented. But three years later, when Sher Bahadur Deuba became prime minister for the second time, the rule was lifted.
After the implementation of this rule again, the office hours of government offices have been fixed from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. After the government implemented the rule, NRB had also decided to follow it. NRB will be open from 9:30 am to 4 pm on weekdays.
