The meeting of the COVID-19 Crisis Management Centre that was held in Singhadurbar today has concluded. The meeting has come to a conclusion that instead of announcing a state of public health emergency immediately there is a need to amend the laws to strengthen the response process during times like the outbreak of the COVID-19.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli too was present in today’s meeting.
Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali mentioned that though discussions were held regarding announcing state of public health emergency the meeting decided against it. He informed that emphasis was laid on the need to amend and introduce stronger laws to cope with such crisis.
Minister Gyawali stated that the centre is trying to identify the works that could be accomplished if a state of public health emergency was implemented. “We are comparing what could be done when a state of public health emergency is announced with the current scenario,” he said. He stated that if the government feels that it will deliver results then it could be announced otherwise there is no point in implementing it.
He also mentioned that the CCMC meeting today came with three key findings in relation to the fight against the spread of the coronavirus. The first difficulty he mentioned was that hospitals and health centres were not being operated in a unified manner. “The other difficulty we found was that the procurement of emergency medical supplies has been delayed due to the lengthy procurement process,” Minister Gyawali mentioned.
Finally, he said that the laws governing such situations are not strong enough to do the needful in a quick manner.
