A variety of programs are being held across the country today to celebrate Democracy Day, in commemoration of the day when the Nepali people stood against the then-autocratic Rana regime subsequently establishing democracy for the first time in the country.
As a result of the struggle and sacrifices of the ordinary Nepali people, the Rana regime ended on Falgun 7, 2007 B.S. beginning a new era of democracy. Notably, Shukraraj Shastri, Gangalal Shrestha, Dasharath Chand, Dharmabhakta Mathema, and others sacrificed their lives to liberate their fellow Nepalis from autocratic rule.
Reminding the importance of Democracy Day, the President, the Vice-President, the Prime Minister, and the leaders of the major political parties have extended their greetings to all while also paying tributes to the martyrs on this historical occasion.
A special ceremony is being held at Tundikhel in the federal capital later today in presence of the President, the Vice President, the Prime Minister, and other dignitaries.
