Nepali Congress claims for chief minister in Gandaki

The opposition parties in Gandaki Province have made a claim to form the government. Krishna Chandra Nepali Pokharel, a lawmaker of Nepali Congress, has made a claim for the post of chief minister with the signatures of a majority of National Assembly members.

He has submitted his claim at the Office of the Province Chief.

Pokharel has laid claim to the chief minister’s post with the support of 15 lawmakers of Nepali Congress, 11 from CPN (Maoist Centre), and 2 each from Rastriya Janamorcha and Janata Samajbai Party-Nepal. He also has the support of Deepak Manange.

Earlier today, Chief of Gandaki Province, Sita Kumari Poudel, had called on the provincial lawmakers to make a claim for the post of chief minister by June 12. The call to make a claim for the post had been made as Prithvi Subba Gurung who had been appointed as chief minister of the province as per Article 168 (3) of the Constitution of Nepal on May 12 could not win the vote of confidence in the National Assembly as per Article 168 (4) of the Constitution on Thursday.

Chandi Prasad Aryal, Spokesperson at the Office of the Province Chief, had informed that after the National Assembly forwarded a letter notifying the province chief about Gurung losing the vote of confidence the call to claim the post of chief minister was made as per Article 168 (5).

Province Chief Poudel had asked the lawmakers to make the claim for the chief minister’s post as per Article 168 (2) in a manner that they can win the vote of confidence during the meeting of the National Assembly that is to be held at 3 pm on Saturday (June 12).

The statement issued by the provincial chief’s office also mentioned that until the next government is formed the current council of ministers will handle the responsibilities as per Article 169 (3) of the Constitution.
