Stakeholders have underscored the need for the National Human Rights Council (NHRC) to work impartially in the cases of human rights violations and in favor of human rights.
At a programme organized by the Commission in Nepalgunj in Banke district today on its 23rd anniversary, the stakeholders emphasized that the Commission should work impartially as the citizens are not able to guarantee their rights.
Judge at High Court Tulasipur, Bhanubhakta Sharma Neupane, said it was necessary to make people more aware and alert in protection and promotion of human rights. "People are still confused about what are the cases of human rights violation. Such ignorance tends to spur the possibility of violation of human rights. Hence, the people should be sensitized about human rights."
Judge Neupane suggested the Commission be more serious regarding registration of the cases of human rights violation, arguing that not as many incidents are registered with the Commission as they should have been.
Stating that the role of the Commission was important to protect and promote human rights, he stressed on transparency in the Commission's delivery.
According to him, the high court and Supreme Court are working to defend human rights in the cases of human rights violation when there were no related laws.
He added that the country had placed relevant laws for protection and promotion of human rights at present.
Similarly, NHRC Nepalgunj office Chief Dwarika Sharma Adhikari pledged to take into consideration the positive recommendations furnished by the stakeholders and to move ahead by improving their shortcomings.
Other participants in the programme spoke of the need for the three-tier government to devise programmes for protection and promotion of human rights.
Human rights activists, representatives from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepali Army, civil society, among others, were present on the occasion.
