Lawyers representing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Agni Prasad Sapkota, have started placing their arguments before the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, in Kathmandu, on July 4, 2021.

The Supreme Court today issued a show cause notice to Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Krishna Gopal Shrestha.

Rupa Sunar had filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court seeking the dismissal of Minister Shrestha from the Council of Ministers on July 4. She had filed the writ against Minister Shrestha citing that action should be initiated against him as per rules related to the protection of people against racial discrimination.

The show cause notice was issued by a single bench of Justice Kumar Regmi. The court has also summoned both the parties related to the case on July 12 to hold discussions on an interim order related to the case.

Sunar, a journalist by profession, had initially filed a case against Saraswati Pradhan, who owns a house in Babar Mahal, Kathmandu, on June 20 for refusing to rent her a room due to her caste. The police had then arrested Pradhan and kept her in custody for three days for further investigation.

Later, police had released Pradhan from custody. Minister Shrestha had apparently dropped Pradhan from the police station to her home in his vehicle. Sunar had mentioned in her writ that Minister Shrestha had used his position to influence the investigation related to the case.
