UML aggrieved by death of former Speaker Dhungana

KATHMANDU: The CPN (UML) has expressed grief over the demise of former Speaker Damannath Dhungana.

Issuing a press statement today, the party's Publicity and Publications Department aggrieved the death of Dhungana, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

The party has acknowledged his contribution to Nepal's democratic movement, improvement of human rights and the area of justice.

Dhungana, who was a follower and promoter of the principle 'the government is of the ruling party(ies) and the parliament is that of the opposition(s)', established a clear standard for the Speaker in the parliamentary system and advocated for the neutrality of the Speaker, and he will be always remembered, Department Chief Rajendra Gautam said in the statement.

Dhungana breathed his last in the course of treatment at the Frontline Hospital here for liver complications on Sunday. He was 83. He was a senior advocate, human rights activist and a civil society leader.

The government today announced a public holiday, mourning the passing away of the former Speaker.
