The main opposition party, the CPN-UML, has said that the US-backed Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement should be implemented in a way that is not in the interest of the nation.

Speaking at a press meet organized by the UML today to publicize the party's views on the MCC, he said that it was necessary to pay due attention to the foreign aid before signing the agreement.

On the occasion, UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli said that MCC should be taken as a development project and urged not to politicize it by creating differences and conflicts. He said that it was wrong for the activists to take to the streets to protest against the MCC.

Stating that the government should immediately go for a fresh mandate, Oli, who is also the leader of the main opposition party, said that discussions were held between the Congress and the UML for the defense of democracy and the constitution. He also said that there should be cooperation between the Nepali Congress and the UML, which have been fighting for democracy.

He accused the UML of sidelining the party without creating an environment for them to participate in the parliamentary process. Chairman Oli accused the MCC of making misleading remarks in the House of Representatives.

Referring to rumors that the MCC agreement was part of the Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS) and that his government had made a mistake in submitting it to parliament, he said that then Minister Pradip Gyawali had gone to the US and made it a part of the IPS. "The United States is saying it is not part of the IPS," Oli said. Now they also say that it is not a part of IPS. Even in the explanatory declaration, they have said no. And why the fuss about Gyawali being made a part of IPS? ”
