Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has advised people who have purchased their mobile phones in Nepal not to register the International Mobility Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of their devices.

NTA has published a notice stating that the IMEI number of mobile phones that have been purchased through authorised sellers who legally import the phones does not have to be registered by individuals.

The telecom regulator has made it mandatory for registration of IMEI number of mobile phones from July 16 to stop the illegal import and sales of such devices and also to control the misuse of mobile phones. It will be implementing the Mobile Device Management System from the said date.

The notice mentions that it has been receiving an enormous number of calls asking whether the IMEI number of mobiles that have been bought in Nepal need to be registered. NTA has also mentioned that the number of people visiting the link to register the IMEI number had also increased tremendously due to which the regulator was facing technical issues with its website.

Nepal Telecommunications Authority has appealed to all to buy mobile phones only through authorised sellers who have imported them legally and have registered the IMEI number so that they do not face any hassles in the future.
