KATHMANDU: The Department of Postal Service has brought into use two new postage stamps.
Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung and Ministry Secretary Radhika Aryal affixed the first cancellation mark on the postage stamps at the Ministry today. The new postage stamps are entitled '150th World Post Day' and 'INTERPOL- 100Th Anniversary'.
This is the first issue of postage stamps in 2024 series. The Department of Postal Service has so far printed 1,452 types of postage stamps.
The postage stamps which have been affixed the first cancellation marks are of Rs 10 denomination and one million copies of each have been issued, according to the DPS.
The Universal Postal Union (UPU), the leading organisation of postal service and system, was established on October 9, 1874. One hundred and ninety-two countries, including Nepal, are the members of UPU.
Similarly, INTERPOL was established on September 7, 1923.
In his remarks after affixing the first cancellation mark, Minister Gurung said that although an important entity, the Postal Service is lagging behind due to the neglect of the State.
He expressed his commitment to modernize the postal service and make it strong and efficient.
Minister Gurung on the occasion urged the Department to bring a change in its 'traditional' working style and provide services in the 'digital' style.
Secretary Aryal said the Department has historical and cultural importance. She said that the Ministry is preparing to bring into operation the Security Printing Centre, following which it will be possible to print the postage stamps, bank notes and other documents of national security within the country itself.
Director General of the Department, Manamaya Pangeni Bhattarai expressed her commitment to modernize the postal service.
