Australia's national carrier Qantas announced on Monday a vaccine reward mega prize for passengers fully inoculated to help the country return to normalcy.
Beginning on Tuesday, double-jabbed Australian frequent flyers over the age of 18 will be able to claim their reward with a choice of 1,000 Qantas Points, 15 status credits, or a flight discount of 20 Australian dollars (14.4 U.S. dollars) that could be used for Qantas or its low-cost subsidiary airline Jetstar.
In addition, members will automatically enter into a mega prize draw, and 10 winners will win a year's worth of flights, accommodation, and fuel, including international destinations when the borders open.
The campaign was launched in response to the country's vaccination targets to help Australia reach the requirements of extending the travel bubble with an 80 per cent vaccination rate.
As the state of New South Wales (NSW) recorded its third day of over 800 COVID-19 cases on Monday, the outbreak shows no sign of abating during the lockdown.
NSW authorities took the vaccination rate as the path of lifting restrictions, urging residents to shift focus on vaccination rate, not daily increasing cases.
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said the COVID vaccine rollout was critical for the travel industry, as well as breaking the cycle of lockdowns and protecting public health.
"Getting vaccinated is an important step that every Australian can take that brings us that little bit closer to life as we knew it," he said.
"As the national carrier, we want to recognize those who have made the effort to protect themselves and the community."
Joyce said getting the nation's vaccine rate up to 70 per cent and 80 per cent would mean thousands of people could return to work.
