In 1973, a large mountaineering team of 64 members came from Italy to climb Mt. Everest. One hundred Sherpas were involved in the expedition. Eight members of the team had successfully climbed Mt. Everest from the southern face and among them was the youngest climber, Shambhu Tamang. He set the world record for climbing Mt. Everest at the youngest age. He had climbed Everest on May 5, 1973 at the age of 17 years, 6 months and 15 days.
However, Tamang said he did not go to Everest for the record. He said that he was attracted to climb the mountain by seeing those who went to the mountain through his village from an early age.
Tembachiri Sherpa broke Tamang's record in 2001, 29 years after he had long held the record. Tembachiri climbed Mt. Everest at the age of 16.
Now the youngest climber in the world is American Citizen Jordan Romero. He climbed Everest on May 10, 2010 at the age of 13 years, 10 months and 10 days.
Climber Tamang was also the founder of Nepal Mountaineering Association, the only alpine club in Nepal. He had also worked as an advisor to the association for a long time.
Climber Sambhu Tamang was born in 1955 in Risyangkhu, Sindhupalchowk. His commitment to mountain tourism started at the age of 16 and lasted for the rest of his life. Despite setting a world record as the youngest climber in the world, Tamang climbed Mt. Everest for the second time in 1985 after 12 years. He also climbed mountains like Choyu Makalu. He climbed many small mountains and worked as a trekking guide for a long time.
Tamang received various important awards. The last time he was awarded the Mount Everest and Tenzing-Hillary Prize was awarded by the Tourism Ministry.
Climber Shambhu Tamang was aware of the condition of those working in the climbing field. Therefore, he stressed that they should set up a welfare fund For this work, he even provided Rs. 50,000 to the Mountaineering Association. But it took a few years to materialize.
Climber Tamang was concerned about the ongoing climate change in the Himalayan region.
Tamang, who had been living with his family in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, had been suffering from cancer for a long time. He was being treated at the Cancer Hospital in Harisiddhi, Lalitpur. He died at the hospital at 10 am on Thursday.
Nepal Mountaineering Association has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Shambhu Tamang, the founder and advisor of the association and world renowned climber.
