The United States has advised its citizens not to travel to Nepal. This warning has been issued due to the high infection rates of the coronavirus seen in Nepal in recent weeks.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States had earlier issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice for Nepal due to COVID-19, indicating a very high level of COVID-19 in the country. Subsequently, on May 10, the State Department elevated the Travel Advisory for Nepal to Level 4 – Do Not Travel.
Currently, regularly scheduled commercial flights departing Nepal are not available. On May 11, the Government of Nepal extended the flight suspension through the night of May 31.
As per the US Embassy in Kathmandu, it has requested the Nepali government to permit the operation of charter flights by airlines providing service to the United States but has not received any word of approval for the operation of such flights.
The embassy has also urged its citizens who are in Nepal and want to return to get their names registered if they have not done so. The embassy has further mentioned that if charter flights receive approval to operate, the embassy will send out information about how one can proceed to book a seat on one of the flights and purchase a charter flight ticket.
