A cabinet meeting held on Sunday promoted Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Dhiraj Pratap Singh to the post of Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Singh was working in the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). Along with Singh, Bishwaraj Pokharel, Sahakul Bahadur Thapa and Rabindra Bahadur Dhanuk were also in the race to become the Inspector General of Police. However, the government has appointed third-ranked Singh as IGP.

Pokharel and Thapa were made AIGs by the KP Sharma Oli-led government with a single promotion to bring them into the IGP's roster. However, the government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba has given priority to Singh, who is behind Pokhrel and Thapa.

Rule 41 of the Police Rules-2014 states that the government may promote a candidate from the AIG to the post of Inspector General of Police.

However, decisions have to be made on the basis of seniority, efficiency, effectiveness, ability to take responsibility, ability to provide leadership and ability to encourage and mobilize the police under oneself.

The current IGP Shailesh Thapa Chhetri and his batch of police officers have retired from today (Sunday) after to 30 years of service. Singh will assume the leadership of the police immediately.
