KATHMANDU: The Ghode Jatra festival, a long-standing tradition, is being observed today in the Kathmandu Valley.

As per legend, a demon named Gurumapa once lived in a tree in the east-southeast section of Tundikhel, where he terrorized the city by abducting and devouring children. Although the locals eventually managed to slay the demon, they feared that his spirit might return to cause harm.

To keep the spirit at bay, the Ghode Jatra festival is held annually on Chaitra Krishna Aunsi, featuring a grand horse race at Tundikhel. This event symbolizes trampling the demon’s spirit under the hooves of galloping horses. Additionally, food is offered at the base of the same tree at night to pacify Gurumapa and safeguard the city’s children.

As part of the festivities, the Nepali Army will present equestrian displays, motorcycle stunts, physical fitness demonstrations, and martial arts performances at Tundikhel in Kathmandu.
