Minister for Water Supply and Sanitation Umakanta Chaudhary has directed the authorities concerned to build structures so as to increase treatment speed of sewage water.
At present, treatment speed of wastewater should be increased to at least 50 percent so as to meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, he said. At present, the treatment speed stands at only three percent, according to available data with the government.
The government has challenges ahead to treat 48 percent sewage water in eight years, he said while inspecting the wastewater treatment centers under-construction at Dhobighat in Lalitpur by the Project Implementation Directorate, Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) today.
The government should prioritise wastewater treatment, he said. "Both population and urbanisation is increasing. There is a need to build a sewage water treatment center at all 753 local levels. The project at Dhobighat should be also completed in time."
Two wastewater treatment centers are under construction at Dhobighat. One of the projects has seen 26 per cent construction work and another approximately 80 per cent. The estimated cost for the project is Rs 74 million, according to Rajesh Kushabaha, director of the Project Implementation Directorate, KUKL, adding that over 800,000 population is expected to be benefitted from the project.
