Need for a special committee to remove language confusion: Council Chairman Basnet

Balkrishna Basnet, chairman of the Press Council of Nepal, has said that there is a need for a committee involving experts to remove the confusion on language issues. He says that the government should take the main responsibility for that.

In a program organized by the Press Council of Nepal and Nepal Sarashta Samaj held at Sanchagram, Chairman Basnet expressed his belief that if the government takes the initiative to form a committee to include the aspects related to language, the confusion related to language will be removed. He pointed out that there is a need for a committee involving senior and experienced experts.

He insists on learning which language and how to use journalism as a whole from literary journalism. He said, "Literary journalism should save journalism as a whole and the state should save literary journalism." Since there is confusion about which language is considered official, he emphasized that it should be removed and uniformity should be maintained.

In the program, senior writer Nagendraraj Sharma also mentioned that the government should form a committee with people who have expertise in language matters to make the language universal.

Senior linguist Sharachchandra Wasti said that language is the root of development of knowledge, science and civilization. Deepak Pandey, a member of the Press Council, said that Nepali language is being destroyed from many sides.

Radheshyam Lekali, president of Literary Journalists Association, said that there is a need for uniformity in the language used in the national media.

Shriom Shrestha Rodan, President of Nepal Srashta Samaj mentioned that many people are considering literary magazines as a basics for learning the language. Facilitating the program, the chief officer of the council, Jhabindra Bhusal, said that discussions on literary journalism and language issues will be continued in the coming days.
