KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has emphasized that the 1923 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Nepal and the United Kingdom played a pivotal role in establishing Nepal’s status as an independent and sovereign nation on the world stage.
Speaking at an event on ‘Nepal-UK Relations’ at the British Parliament in Westminster, Dr. Koirala expressed his gratitude to the UK for recognizing Nepal’s sovereignty. His comments were relayed by his Principal Private Secretary, Dinesh Chandra Thapaliya.
“This gathering today lays the foundation for our enduring friendship,” Dr. Koirala remarked. “It is a great honor to discuss our long-standing relationship and I deeply appreciate the warm hospitality extended to us.”
Dr. Koirala highlighted the growing people-to-people ties between Nepal and the UK and thanked the British government for its continuous support to Nepal’s people and its sovereign parliament, built on this historical relationship.
“The longstanding and distinguished contributions of Nepalese soldiers, especially the Gurkhas, to the British Army are at the heart of our enduring friendship,” he noted.
“Over 200,000 Gurkha soldiers fought for Britain in both world wars, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice. I am glad the British government has recognized and honored their dedication and sacrifice.”
Dr. Koirala also urged the British government to promptly address the legitimate demands of Gurkha soldiers in acknowledgment of their heartfelt service to Britain.
