On the occasion of the International Year of Millets, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu hosted a promotional program to raise awareness about millet and its nutritional properties.

On that occasion, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Beduram Bhusal said that the hilly region of Nepal is fertile for millet production and a campaign has been initiated to increase the production of various crops along with millet. Nepal wants to learn from the Indian experience about the research, development and value chain of millet, Bhusal said.

Minister Bhusal said that the government has given high importance to Millet cultivation promotion since it is an important source of food security and nutrition.

Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava, said the International Year of Millets 2023 is an opportunity to raise awareness of the multiple benefits of millets, from nutrition and health to environmental sustainability and economic development.

He also shared that there is a partnership between Rampur Agricultural University and Uttar Pradesh Agricultural University for agricultural development programs. "Since millet can be produced in less time and with less water, there is a lot of potential to increase its production in Nepal," he said.

FAO representative for Nepal, Ken Shimizu, said that all should know about the nutritional importance of millet farming, which contributes to food security.
