It goes without saying that there are more than a few biological differences between men and women. However, one significant difference that goes unnoticed is the variation in our skin. Due to lesser hair growth in females, their skin is softer. Skincare products used by females are generally gentle and mild. The same products may not give the best results as men’s skin is more coarse and rough.
24-year-old Nikita Paudel is a licensed makeup artist and beautician. “There has always been an abundant amount of skincare routine for females. Very few of us know the skincare routine for men”, says Paudel. Traditionally speaking, skincare for men has not been much complicated. At present, more men are focusing on healthy skin and investing in a proper skincare regime. “It's important to lay down the foundation of a good routine”, she adds.
According to Paudel, who has been working as a freelance makeup artist for 7 years, basic skincare for men can be covered in just these steps:
Make face wash your ritual
Washing your face with just water may seem good enough, but it is not. With all the pollution, dirt, and excess oil clogging your pores, you do need extra help to get a clean face i.e. face wash. There are tons of face washes available in the market. Find the one that suits you best based on your skin type.
Your shaving technique plays a much bigger role when it comes to having healthy skin. Always remember to wet your skin before shaving to soften the hairs and apply a good amount of aftershave or serum immediately after. Using shaving cream and shaving in the direction of your hair growth saves you from ingrown hairs, razor burns, and razor bumps. Change your blades every five to seven shaves to avoid irritation and redness.
Moisturizer + SPF
Nobody likes flaky and dry skin. Applying moisturizer at least twice a day does not only keep your skin hydrated but also keeps it supple and soft. Sunscreen should never be forgotten, even when indoors to avoid unwanted tans, sunburns, and other serious damage to your skin. It is crucial to be mindful about the products you’re using too. Research well before testing skincare products, especially new ones.
“Based on their skin type, men should also add cleanser and toner into their skincare routines. Occasional scrubs, masks, and treatment-specific formulas like serums and facial oils also work wonders”, says Paudel. “Always consult an expert or your dermatologist before experimenting”, she adds.
