There have been tremendous changes in the sphere of communications in Nepal, as there are various social media applications like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, and many more which make our lives easier.
Because of social media, we now have rapid access to information, it is easier to network and share ideas, may it be recipes for cooking new dishes, product recommendations, job vacancies, or even up to date and information on the political landscape of the world.
It has transformed the means and time for communicating news, views, ideas, and opinions from one individual to another. In a survey conducted by NepalNews, youth talked about what app they prefer the most and why, and also shared their opinions.
As Instagram is a place where teens go to find what’s new and what’s next, it is the platform of choice for 40% of them. Users claim that because the app’s algorithm works with photographers and a select audience, they can choose what they want in their feed. People also use it to share their lives with loved ones and learn more about each other.
It was also found that 20% of the sample survey favor Facebook. The user’s experience is simple, relevant, and very easy to navigate, ranging from sharing thoughts and think pieces to family photos, entertainment material, and staying in touch with friends, family, and relatives. Non-users of Facebook, on the other hand, do not consider it a hip internet hangout spot because it’s difficult to seem cool when you’re hanging out with your parents.
Twitter did not have much popularity amongst the youth with only 10% using it regularly. The ones who do prefer it as it offers a venue for natural dialogue. Some of them, however, dislike it since it revolves around controversies, people’s thoughts, ideas, and opinions.
