KATHMANDU: Actress Manisha Koirala made her Bollywood debut with the film ‘Feri Bhetoula’ before becoming widely known. She later appeared in the Nepali film ‘Dharmā’. Having successfully made a mark in Bollywood, where her acting has gained international recognition, Koirala also triumphed over cancer, an experience that led her to reflect on her lifestyle and personal growth.

At the 8th edition of the Nepal International Film Festival (NIFF) organized by the Nepal Film and Cultural Foundation in Kathmandu, Koirala demonstrated her willingness to come back to Nepali films. In the “Cinema Dialogue” session, she stated, “I am willing to work in Nepali cinema again, and Nepali writers and directors can think of new and innovative subjects.” I have observed the changes in Nepali film production and its artistic style.”

She recalled urging Nepali filmmakers to tell their own stories from the early stages of her career. She emphasized her belief that replicating foreign films for Nepali cinema does not inspire creativity. Koirala also discussed how both commercial and artistic films in Nepali cinema are succeeding, bringing pride to the industry.

She said, “The style I suggested in the early days is now being reflected in the films. I’m happy because artistic films are helping us stand tall at international film festivals, while commercial films are setting new records. This is wonderful news for filmmakers.”

Koirala’s most recent Indian web series ‘Heeramandi’, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, gained significant attention. The series, which became popular in both India and Nepal, marked her second collaboration with Bhansali after ‘Khamoshi’ 28 years ago. Reflecting on her role, Koirala shared that she left no stone unturned in her performance, especially since the role required her to speak in Urdu. She worked diligently with a language expert to master the nuances of the dialect.

During the interaction, Koirala also mentioned that she has no plans to enter politics or start producing films at the moment, but she is currently working on a book. The festival, according to the organizers, will conclude tonight.
