KATHMANDU: South Indian Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and director Prithviraj Sukumaran’s much-awaited film “L2: Empuraan” is set to release in Nepal this Thursday. Distribution Company Banktes Entertainment officially announced the release through a press statement on Tuesday. The film is the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer.
According to Mohanlal’s latest social media post, the film has already earned ₹580 million (₹58 crores) globally from advance ticket sales alone. Trade analysts predict that Empuraan could become the fastest Malayalam film to cross ₹1 billion (₹100 crores). Experts also consider this to be one of the biggest Malayalam films of 2025.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala acknowledged the film’s immense buzz, stating, “In Kerala, the film is already at the top, and its opening day collection is expected to be ₹150 million (₹15 crores). Globally, the first-day collection is projected to be around ₹400–500 million (₹40–50 crores), which would be a record for a Malayalam film.”
Mohanlal has been going through a challenging phase in his career, as his recent films, including Malaikottai Vaaliban and his directorial debut Barroz, failed to perform well at the box office. However, Empuraan’s advance bookings in Kerala and other states have been exceptional.
Analyst Pillai further stated that international bookings are also progressing well, mentioning, “Even in Ireland, where the Malayali population is small, the film is performing strongly. In the US, advance ticket sales have already crossed ₹410 million (₹41 crores) and are still rising.”
L2: Empuraan is an action thriller and the sequel to Lucifer, which marked Prithviraj Sukumaran’s directorial debut. Alongside Mohanlal, the film features Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Abhimanyu Singh, Jerome Flynn, and Suraj Venjaramoodu in key roles.
