KATHMANDU: ROSKINO has organized the screening of Russian films during The Nepal International Film Festival from March 20th-24th.
On March 22nd, Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, will be hosting the Russian Film Day. During special screening sessions, guests will have the opportunity to see three Russian films organized by ROSKINO and supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. The event will be a part of the 8th Nepal International Film Festival.
Nepal has become the latest spot to land on ROSKINO’s Russian Film Festival’s radar. This festival has been a way for ROSKINO to showcase Russian films abroad, as well as widen screenings of their films throughout Southeast and South Asia. The festival has already organized showings in China, India, Thailand, South Korea, and Laos.
The Russian Film Day program includes both the works of famous directors as well as directorial debuts. Guests will be able to see the war drama Nuremberg (2023, directed by Nikolay Lebedev), the teen-love melodrama Four Quarters (2024, directed by Evgenia Tirdatova), and the romantic comedy/road-trip adventure, Three of Us (2021, directed by Alexandra Sarana).
Nuremberg is one of the key war Russian dramas of 2023. This historical movie is the first full-length feature fiction film about the Nuremberg trials. Nuremberg includes a host of Russian film stars, such as Sergey Bezrukov, Evgeny Mironov, Igor Petrenko, and Lubov Aksyonova, as well as German and British actors.
Four Quarters is a film adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name by Russian writer Alexander Yuk. The global premiere of the teen drama occurred during the 46th Moscow International Film Festival in April 2024. Director Evgenia Tirdatova is better known as a documentary director and Four Quarters is only her second full-length feature fiction film. Her first full-length feature film, Turbulence Zone, was nominated for Best Film at the Cyprus Film Days International Festival in 2011.
Three of Us is the young author Alexandra Sarana’s debut as a full-length feature film director. A picturesque romantic comedy invites viewers on a trip around the Perm region of Russia along with the main characters of this romantic comedy: a young civil servant and her casual passenger. Starring is Irina Starshenbaum, one of the popular young Russian actresses who already has over 40 roles under her belt.
The 8th Nepal International Film Festival is held from March 20th – 24th. This film festival premiered in 2018 and is one of the main annual cultural events in Nepal. The 2025 Festival features 87 films from 40 countries. Many of these films have been shown at some the most prestigious international film festivals: such as those held in Busan, Cannes, Locarno, and Berlin.
The festival includes national and international competitions for fiction, documentary, and full-length feature films. This year will see the addition of a new category for both films about Artificial Intelligence or films that were created using AI-technologies.
Apart from out-of-competition screenings at the 8th Nepal International Film Festival, some Russian movies will also be competing in one of the categories. The Big film by director Olga Dymskaya will be taking part in the short film competition. This is not the first Russian film that will have competed at this festival. At the 2024 Nepal Film Festival, the Podalirius film by director Ramazi Baranov, competed in the documentary category.
