Bishnumati is a 15.2 km (9.44 miles) long river that originates from Bishnu Dwar Tarebhir, north of Kathmandu. In literal translation, Bishnumati means the beloved river of Lord Vishnu. The Bishnumati River, on the other hand, is a result of growing development. The river's value is slowly diminishing due to rising wastes from industries and families, putting natural resources and cultural heritages near the river's banks at risk. The sand beneath the river is being washed away as well.

Water loss and excavation of river bed materials are causing problems for the Bishnumati river. The river's water has been extracted for a variety of purposes, including building and drinking water. By the time the river reaches Balaju, it has silently accepted all of the wastes that have been left in its wake. After passing through the Balaju Industrial Area, the river water is heavily polluted.
