In 1989 United Nations decided to observe July 11 as World Population Day and the day has been observed since 1990. On July 11, 1987, the world's population had reached 5 billion. It was considered necessary at the moment to raise public awareness about the impact on the environment, development and other sectors due to the growing population. So the United Nations decided to celebrate this day.

According to the United Nations Population Fund, World Population Day should be celebrated as a celebration of human progress. With that in mind, the slogan for this year's day is "A World of 8 Billion People: An Increased Step to a Better Future, Opportunity, Rights and Choice for All."

According to the United Nations Population Fund, the world's total population is now 7.95 billion. Of these, 65 percent are between the ages of 16 and 64. There are 25 percent of people over the age of 10 and under the age of 65.

The world's population has grown rapidly since the middle of the 20th century. Between 1965 and 1970, the population grew at the fastest rate of 2.1 percent per year. The world's population has tripled between 1950 and 2020.

The Population Fund estimates that the world's population will reach 8.5 billion by 2030 and 9.70 billion by 2050, and that the world's population will reach 10.9 billion by 2100.

Population growth has increased due to fertility rate and increasing human age and rapid urbanization, migration and so on. But compared to the last few decades, there is a stark difference between fertility and human lifespan. In the early 1970's, there were an average of 4.5 children per woman in the world. But in 2015 it dropped to less than 2.5 children per woman.

The average life expectancy has raised from 64.5 years in the 1990s to 72.6 years in 2019. In 2007, there were more people living in urban areas than in rural areas. By 2050, 66 percent of the world's population will live in urban areas.

Nepal has been conducting census every 10 years since 1968. At the time of the first census, the population of the country was 5.638 million. In 1800, 110 years before the first census, Nepal's population was estimated at 4 million. According to the National Census of Nepal (2078 BS), the total population of the country has reached 291,92,480.

About 60 percent of the world's population lives in Asia. China and India alone make up about 35.8 percent of the world's population.

China, the world's most populous country, has a population of 1.44 billion population and India has a population of 1.4 billion.

Population growth is declining in China and rising in India. Therefore, India is expected to become the most populous country in the world in the next five years.

Vatican City is the least populous country in the world as it has a population of only 800.
