The Martyr Dharma bhakta National Organ Transplantation Centre observed the Organ Donation Day on Sunday. The Centre organized a programme securing attendance of chiefs of all four municipalities and ward chairs in Bhaktapur.
It was organized to create public awareness on organ donation from clinically dead persons.
At the programme, Mayor of Bhaktapur Municipality, Sunil Prajapati, expressed commitment that Bhaktapur district would be made a model city for organ donation. "We engage in massive public awareness on organ donation," he vowed.
Centre' Executive Director Dr Pukar Chandra Shrestha said once organ donation after clinical death is practiced, it helps reduce economic burden. Another benefit of such sort of organ donation is- health of the live persons is not risked.
He also urged all local levels in the district to help create infrastructures for the organ donation service.
Similarly, chief consultant nephrologist Dr Kalpana Kumari Shrestha informed that 3,000 people suffer kidney failure every year in Nepal.
Kidney disease is detected one in each 10 persons across the globe.
She also viewed local levels could play a significant role in creating awareness on organ donation.
