NAWALPARASI: Magar communities across the country are celebrating the 43rd Magar National Unity Day today with various events and activities.

Cultural processions and demonstrations are taking place in several areas of Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East), which has a large Magar population.

The Nepal Magar Association’s district working committee, along with other organizations, is organizing the events, as shared by Indra Phal Magar, a central member of the Association.

“On the occasion of Magar Foundation Day, Magar associations at the district, municipality, and rural municipality levels, as well as organizations abroad, are preparing to hold various programs,” he said.

Bhum Bahadur Rai Magar, president of the Association’s Nawalpur chapter, stated that the day is expected to play a significant role in preserving traditional folk cultures, such as Salaijo, Jhyaure, and Kauda.

The day aims to raise awareness among the new generation about the Magar language, culture, history, and customs.

This day, celebrated every year on Falgun 15 (February 27), commemorates the collective efforts to protect the rights and existence of the Magar community and honors the founding of the Association.

According to the 2078 BS National Census, the Magar community in Nepal has a total population of 2.01 million, which makes up 6.9 percent of the total population.

On this occasion, all eight local governments in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) have declared a public holiday.

Separate notices from the local governments have confirmed that all public offices will be closed today to mark the day.

The municipalities of Gaindakot, Devchuli, Kawasoti, and Madhyabindu, along with the rural municipalities of Hupsekot, Binayi Triveni, Bullingtar, and Boudikali, have all declared a public holiday.

According to the National Census, the Magar community in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) numbers 103,949, which accounts for 27.49 percent of the district’s total population.
