Jack Waddell, the beloved opera singer and vocal coach, passed away at the age of 83 in Bloomington, Illinois, his hometown. Born on March 31, 1941, Waddell’s life was an inspiring journey of overcoming adversity and finding his place in the world of music.

After earning his degree from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1963, Waddell faced numerous challenges—particularly as a Black performer in an industry that often limited opportunities for artists of color. Fluent in several languages, Waddell’s performances transcended borders, leaving a lasting impact on opera, concert halls, and television.

Upon returning to the U.S. in the 1980s, Waddell shifted his focus to teaching and became a guiding light for future Broadway stars. Notable performers, including Brian Stokes Mitchell, Jessica Vosk, and Brandon Victor Dixon, have credited him with shaping their vocal careers. In 2023, the American Theatre Wing recognized his incredible contributions to Broadway by honoring him as an “Unsung Hero.”
Jack Waddell’s legacy lives on through his students and the many lives he touched. Though his voice has fallen silent, his impact will resonate for generations to come.
