‘Khaire’, the dog who was brutally killed with a metal rod and shovel after being tied to an electricity pole by two men, at 28 Kilo of Dhulikhel has captured the attention of supporters and animal activists from across Nepal.

In a press meet on Sunday, the office bearer of Rescue Animal Nepal, Srijana Thakuri, shared that though they have requested police to immediately arrest the youths involved in the incident, nothing to that effect has been done till date.

Rescue Animal Nepal has already filed a case against the youths involved in the heinous crime, but the police have not taken any action yet, said Thakuri. “We will fight for this cause till justice is delivered,” she shared, adding that they will also put pressure on the government to introduce more stringent rules and laws against animal cruelty.

In recent days, animal lovers and activists in Nepal have been diligently raising their voices against any form of cruelty against animals and doing their best to free animals from any form of human exploitation. The animal rights activists have also taken to the streets to protest against the crime committed against Khaire. They have also mobilised support through various social media platforms.

As per Section 291 of the National Criminal Code 2017, no one has the right to kill animals or birds in any of the public places other than religious sites for cultural and traditional practices. Any person violating this law is liable to imprisonment of one month and a fine of up to Rs 5,000. However, activists state that this rule is very lenient and want an even more stringent law against animal cruelty.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhupendra Khatri, chief of the District Police Office of Kavrepalanchowk, said, “Justice will prevail. Crimes have been committed by both those who killed Khaire and also those who took out protests against the killing.” He mentioned that the police are always unbiased during its investigation and those found guilty will be punished.

Both the locals and protestors had created a lot of tension at the site of the incident. Khatri added, “The protestors attacked the house of the alleged perpetrators of the crime. They should have cooperated with the concerned authority on the issue rather than taking the law into their hands.”
