Nepalese who fled from Ukraine into Germany and were imprisoned have now come back home on the initiative of the Nepalese Embassy. According to Nepali Ambassador to Germany, Ram Kaji Khadka, they were detained by the German Immigration Department.
Ambassador Khadka said, Nepalese affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict have stopped contacting the embassy.
Addressing a meeting of the High Level Committee on Saturday evening on the subject of assistance and relief for Nepalese affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ambassador Khadka urged all to remain patient as teams are actively working on bringing Nepalese through Russia-Belarus to Europe. He thanked the Non-Resident Nepalese Association (NRNA) and other organizations for their help in rescuing Nepalese living in Ukraine.
Khadka said that four of the Nepalese displaced by the war were rescued and sent back to Nepal with the help of the Indian government. India has rescued four Nepalese, two from Hungary, one from Romania and one from Poland. Of the 10 people who have returned, six returned to Nepal by their own means.
Meanwhile, the Nepalese Embassy in Germany has issued free travel documents to Nepalese stranded in the war. So far, 56 Nepalese have obtained travel permits.
In the meeting, Health Committee Coordinator Dr. Bodh Subedi informed that six students from Lugan, Ukraine were rescued and taken to a safe place. He also informed that a Nepalese family that has been living in Ukraine for 35 years has left the country.
Pawan Khadka, General Secretary of NRNA Poland, said that the association has made arrangements for food for the stranded Nepalese.
Similarly, Shalikgram Dumre, President of NRNA Spain, informed that 132 Nepalese have come in contact with their association. He informed that arrangements were made for most of the Nepalese to go to Portugal, as per their request. The Chairman of NRNA Portugal, Rabin Adhikari, said that the association was active in providing necessary assistance to the travellers.
After the conflict started in Ukraine, Nepalese in the country have fled to Poland, Slovakia, France, Hungary, Spain, Germany, Romania and Moldova. According to the latest figures so far, 466 people have arrived in Poland, 78 in Slovakia, 28 in Romania, 8 in Hungary and 4 in Moldova.
It is also reported that 11 Nepalese are currently lost in the forests of Lithuania and Belarus. One of them, Subhav Kunwar, had requested for his rescue through WhatsApp. He contacted Jay Prakash Shivakoti, a representative of NRNA Slovakia, and urged him to take the initiative for his rescue on Saturday.
Nepal's Ambassador to Germany, Ram Kaji Khadka, fears that the Nepalese might have entered Europe through other intermediaries without being victims of the conflict in Ukraine. Khadka said that efforts were being made to establish contact with the Nepalese Embassy in Russia by coordinating for their search.
